How to choose an SEO agency in Malaysia

How to Choose an SEO Agency in Malaysia

Who this guide is for

Two SEO quotes for the same website in Malaysia can look nothing alike. This guide shows how to choose an SEO agency by comparing what each one actually does each month, not just the headline price.

We have run SEO for Malaysian businesses since 2012, alongside website design and Google Ads. This guide is written from that work: what a proper retainer contains, what SEO costs, how keyword research works, what AI search changes, and how to tell a good agency from a bad one before you sign.

If you already know you want help, see our SEO services page. If you are still comparing options, read on.

In this guide:

  1. What an SEO retainer actually includes
  2. What SEO costs
  3. Keyword research for Malaysian searchers

What an SEO retainer actually includes

A monthly SEO retainer pays for six kinds of work. Cheap packages usually skip two or three of them, which is why they rarely move rankings.

Layer What the agency does How you can check it
Technical SEO Fixes crawling, indexing, broken links, redirects, page speed and mobile issues Search Console shows fewer errors under Pages and Core Web Vitals
Keyword mapping Matches each service or product page to the searches that bring enquiries You receive a keyword-to-page list, not just a keyword list
On-page optimisation Rewrites titles, meta descriptions, headings and page copy for those searches You can see the changes on your live pages
Content Writes new pages and articles for topics your customers search New URLs appear on your site each month
Link building Earns links from relevant Malaysian business, industry and news sites The agency names the sites, not just a count
Reporting Tracks rankings, clicks and enquiries, and explains what changed A monthly report with Search Console and Analytics data

Two things are worth checking in any proposal.

Is on-page work included every month, or only at the start? Some packages do a one-time setup and then only build links. Pages need ongoing adjustment as Google and competitors change.

Does the report show enquiries, or only rankings? Rankings are a means to an end. A good report connects organic traffic to form submissions, calls or WhatsApp clicks.

What SEO costs

SEO prices in Malaysia vary widely because agencies include very different amounts of work in a monthly fee. Compare what is done each month, not just the headline price.

Our SEO packages

Package Keywords Monthly Yearly Blog articles (800 words)
Basic 10 RM880 RM8,980 RM250 per article
Standard 12 RM1,080 RM10,980 2 a month included
Advanced 20 RM1,480 RM14,980 RM250 per article
Corporate 60 RM2,080 RM22,980 2 a month included

All packages include keyword research, a website SEO audit, on-page and technical optimisation, link building, and reports from Google Analytics and Search Console. On-page optimisation starts from RM1,000 as a one-time fee, waived for Advanced and Corporate subscriptions longer than 6 months. Prices are for WordPress websites; other platforms are quoted separately.

Full details are on our SEO packages page. For a deeper breakdown of SEO costs, read how much SEO costs in Malaysia.

The hidden cost of cheap SEO

A package priced well under the market usually saves money in one of two places: no ongoing on-page work, or low-quality links bought in bulk. The first means rankings stall. The second can get your site demoted, because Google’s spam policies treat bought links as manipulation. Ask any agency to name the sites it will get links from.

Keyword research for Malaysian searchers

Good keyword research finds the searches your buyers actually use, not the terms your industry uses internally. A customer searches “aircon not cold” long before they search “air conditioning maintenance services”.

How we research keywords

  1. List what you sell and who buys it. Services, products, industries and areas you serve.
  2. Pull real search data. Google Keyword Planner and Ahrefs for volumes, and Search Console for queries your site already appears for.
  3. Check search intent. Search each keyword on Google. If page 1 shows service pages, it needs a service page. If it shows guides, it needs an article.
  4. Map one main keyword to one page. Two pages chasing the same keyword compete with each other and both rank lower.
  5. Prioritise by value, not volume. A keyword with 50 searches a month from ready buyers is worth more than one with 5,000 searches from students.

Local or national?

If customers come to you, or you serve one area, target searches with the area name and build your Google Business Profile. If you sell or deliver nationwide, target the service without a location and use one page per service. Avoid creating near-identical pages for every town; Google treats them as low-value doorway pages.

SEO vs Google Ads

Google Ads buys a place at the top of Google today. SEO earns a place in the organic results over months. Most businesses need both, in different proportions as the website matures.

SEO Google Ads
Time to first results 3 to 6 months for easier keywords Same day
Cost model Monthly fee, clicks are free Pay for every click
When you stop paying Rankings fade slowly Traffic stops immediately
Best for Long-term enquiries, research-stage searches Launches, promotions, high-intent searches
Main risk Slow start Cost per click keeps rising

A practical split

  1. Months 1 to 3: most of the budget on Google Ads to get enquiries while SEO groundwork starts. Use the Ads data to see which keywords actually convert.
  2. Months 4 to 9: keep Ads on the best keywords. Point SEO at the keywords that converted in Ads.
  3. Month 10 onwards: as organic rankings arrive, cut Ads spend on keywords where you now rank in the top 3, and move that budget to new services or areas.

As a Google Premier Partner, we manage Google Ads and SEO for many of the same clients. The Ads data is one of the most useful inputs for SEO: it shows which searches turn into enquiries before you spend months ranking for them.

AI search: AI Overviews, ChatGPT, GEO and AEO

Google now answers many searches with an AI Overview above the normal results, and more people ask ChatGPT or Gemini which company to use. Agencies sell this as GEO (generative engine optimisation) or AEO (answer engine optimisation). Here is what actually matters.

What Google says

Google’s own guidance is direct: there are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. You do not need AI text files, new markup or special schema. (Google Search Central)

In other words, AI search runs on the same foundations as normal SEO. An agency that charges a large premium for “AI SEO” as a separate product should explain exactly what it does beyond normal SEO.

What helps you get cited

From what we see in client work, the pages that AI answers quote have a few things in common:

  • Clear, direct answers. A question as a heading, then a 2 to 3 sentence answer under it. FAQ sections work well.
  • Specific facts. Prices in RM, timeframes, numbers. AI answers prefer quoting a figure over a vague claim. For example, Google’s AI Overviews for SEO pricing searches quote package prices directly from agency websites.
  • Consistent business details. The same name, address, phone and services on your website, Google Business Profile and directory listings.
  • Mentions on other sites. Reviews, news features and industry listings help AI tools understand who you are and what you do.

What to ask an agency selling AI SEO

  1. What will you change on my website that normal SEO would not?
  2. How will you measure whether AI tools mention my business?
  3. Can you show a client that gets cited in AI Overviews, and the page being cited?

How long SEO takes

For most Malaysian businesses, low-competition keywords reach page 1 in 3 to 6 months. Competitive keywords, and new websites with no history, take 6 to 12 months or longer.

Three things decide where you fall in that range:

  • How competitive the keyword is. “Snack manufacturer Malaysia” moves faster than “lawyer Kuala Lumpur”.
  • The website’s history. An established domain with some links ranks faster than a new one.
  • Technical health. A slow or badly structured site has to be fixed first.

Any agency promising page 1 in 30 days, or guaranteeing a #1 ranking, is a warning sign. Google states plainly that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. (Google Search Central)

A 12-month SEO roadmap

Months Focus What you should see
1 Audit, keyword mapping, technical fixes, Search Console and Analytics set up An audit report and keyword-to-page plan
2 to 3 On-page rewrites of main service pages, Google Business Profile, first articles More impressions in Search Console
4 to 6 Content for supporting topics, link building, internal linking Easier keywords reach page 1, first organic enquiries
7 to 9 More content and links for competitive keywords, update pages that rank 5 to 15 Main keywords move up, enquiries grow month on month
10 to 12 Expand to new services or areas; refresh older content Organic becomes a steady enquiry channel; review Google Ads spend

Impressions rise first, then clicks, then enquiries. If impressions are not rising by month 3, ask your agency why.

What to look for in an SEO agency

The best test is simple: ask for proof, ask what they will do each month, and check how they would report it. A good agency answers all three without hesitation.

5 things to look for

  1. Real client results. Named clients (or industries), the keywords, and Search Console screenshots. Not just a list of keywords the agency ranks for itself.
  2. A clear monthly scope. What gets done each month: pages optimised, articles written, links built, and from which sites.
  3. Reporting tied to enquiries. Rankings, clicks and leads, explained in plain language.
  4. Technical ability. Someone on the team who can fix site speed, indexing and structure, not only write content.
  5. Fit with your market. Experience in your industry, or with businesses that sell to the same kind of customer.

8 questions to ask before you sign

  1. Can you show results for a client similar to my business?
  2. Which keywords will you target first, and why those?
  3. What will you change on my website in the first 3 months?
  4. Where will links come from? Can you name example sites?
  5. Who writes the content, and do I approve it before it goes live?
  6. What will the monthly report show?
  7. Do I keep full access to my website, Search Console and Analytics?
  8. What is the minimum contract, and what happens if we stop?

How to compare proposals

Put proposals side by side and compare monthly scope, not just the price. Write down, for each agency: number of keywords, pages optimised per month, articles per month, how links are built, report contents, and contract length. The cheapest proposal is often the one with the least work in it.

Frequently asked questions

Q: How much does SEO cost in Malaysia per month?

A: It depends on how competitive your keywords are and how much work is included each month. Our packages are RM880, RM1,080, RM1,480 and RM2,080 a month for 10, 12, 20 and 60 keywords, or RM8,980 to RM22,980 a year.

Q: How long does SEO take to show results?

A: Low-competition keywords usually reach page 1 in 3 to 6 months. Competitive keywords and new websites take 6 to 12 months or more. Search Console impressions should start rising within the first 3 months.

Q: Can an SEO agency guarantee a #1 ranking?

A: No. Google states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. An agency can give you realistic estimates based on your keywords and competition.

Q: What is the difference between SEO, GEO and AEO?

A: SEO improves your ranking in Google’s normal results. GEO and AEO aim to get your business mentioned in AI answers such as Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT. Google says no special optimisation is needed for its AI features beyond good SEO, so treat them as part of SEO rather than a separate service.

Q: What is the difference between SEO and Google Ads?

A: Google Ads pays for a top position immediately and stops when you stop paying. SEO earns organic positions over months, and the traffic continues without paying per click. Most businesses use Ads first and shift budget to SEO as rankings grow.

Q: Should I hire an SEO agency or a freelancer?

A: A freelancer can work for a small site with a few keywords. An agency is better when you need technical fixes, content, link building and reporting together, or when you cannot afford work stopping if one person is unavailable.

Q: What is the minimum contract for SEO?

A: It varies. Many Malaysian agencies ask for 6 or 12 months. Our minimum is 3 months.

Where to start

You do not need to sign anything to take the first step. Check three things this week:

  1. Search Console: is it set up, and are impressions rising or flat?
  2. Your main service pages: does each one target one clear search, in the title and H1?
  3. Your Google Business Profile: is it complete, with recent reviews?

If you want a second opinion, we offer a free SEO audit: we review your website, keywords and competitors and tell you what to fix first, whether or not you hire us. See our SEO services in Malaysia or contact us.
